Progress to Date & Future Plans...
Greeting Friends of Geoffrey...It
was 8 years ago, in the winter & spring of 2001, that I
helped clean out our friend Geoffrey’s cabin alongside
Camp Creek. We removed roughly 50 boxes of cabin
contents, mostly papers, into temporary storage. These
papers, along with assorted memorabilia & performance
tapes, condensed to a total of 42 boxes, were accepted
by the Arizona Historical Foundation in the following
year. There they lay for 4 years, in the Hayden Library
on the ASU campus in Tempe and later in an off-campus
warehouse facility. Little was done to further organize
the papers during that time.

CAVE CREEK- A group of over 30 environmentalists paid
homage to former local naturalist Geoffrey Platts over
the weekend just a few days before Earth Day. The group,
which included his old friends and the ones whose lives
he shaped with his "green" ways, gathered to remember
Platts and talk about how he made them more aware of
nature and the need to preserve it.

NEW:
With permission, we are posting columns that
Geoffrey wrote for the "Foothills Sentinel," Cave Creek, Arizona.
Our seventh offering -- no date available -- is "Benches say much about
adjustment to the desert." Apropro of his own bench, inaugurated April
2003 near Cave Creek, he penned: "In my hometown of Harrogate,
Yorkshire these “In Memoriam” resting spots are not only everywhere --
but are appreciatively used too. This is a superb idea - especially as
England is a country of avid walkers (of all ages). In the summer of ’96,
wandering through the Yorkshire Dales, my friend and I came across just such
a bench..." See "Pen Points Columns."

QUOTE:
(in Geoffrey's inimical calligraphy) Men wanted for hazardous journey. Small wages, bitter cold, long months
of complete darkness, constant danger. Safe return doubtful. Honor and
recognition in case of success. Sr. Ernest Shackleton's newspaper
advertisement calling for Antarctic exploration, circa 1900.

Not to have known, as most men have not, either the mountains or the desert,
is not to have known oneself. Joseph Wood Krutch

QUOTES:
Goodness is
the only investment that never fails. Henry David Thoreau.
Courage is the price that life
exacts for granting peace. The soul that knows it not, knows no release
from little things, knows not the livid
loneliness of fear. Amelia Earhart
(from the back of a G-envelope):
Nature's people I know and they know me; I feel for them a transport of
cordiality. Emily Dickinson.
A Geoffrey

painful and bitter to some -- that all living things on Earth are
kindred. Edward Abbey. Desert Solitaire
