Re: 6th Annual Geoffrey Platts Celebration...
                                               ...Saturday, April 19, 2008
Dear Friends of Geoffrey...

Our sixth annual gathering at the Jewel of the Creek
Preserve in Cave Creek will honor the memory of our naturalist friend, Geoffrey Platts, and reaffirm the importance of Earth Day.  This year we will have with us Sandy Bahr, well known and effective Conservation Outreach Director for Sierra Club's Grand Canyon Chapter.

Since this is an election year, our theme will be "Reach Out and Touch Our Government".  We plan to generate discussion on what we can accomplish as dedicated environmentalists in educating and perhaps changing the thinking of our legislators within Arizona and nationally.  We will have materials available about your legislators and how to reach them, as well as information on current environmental bills before the House and Senate, both locally and nationally.  We will also have sign-up info for future eco-actions.  Sandy Bahr will give us some insights into the current situation at the Legislature and how we can be more effective.

We hope you will stay for lunch down by the creek via a steep short path, where we will continue our conversation and share readings. We will again have with us a long-time close friend of Geoffrey's, Bill Paul, from Great Britain, who always brings new ideas from abroad.

When:

Saturday, April 19, 2008, 9am to 11am

Where:

Geoffrey's bench at Jewel of the Creek Preserve in Cave Creek (directions below).

What to bring:

Water bottle, hat, your lunch (optional) and something to sit on.

We are looking forward to seeing old and new friends.  It's a wonderful way to spend a morning in a beautiful setting.

To answer any questions, please contact Barbra Barnes <barnesphx@aol.com> or by phone (602) 997-8862.  Please join us.

Directions to "Jewel of the Crown" Spur Cross:

(Click here for Google's map directions, to the "Jewel of the Crown" Spur Cross.)

--- >From Phoenix, drive north (e.g., on Cave Creek Road, on I-17) to the intersection of Cave Creek Rd. and Carefree Hwy. From that intersection (stoplight) drive northeast on Cave Creek Rd., away from Phoenix and toward Cave Creek 2+ miles. On the outskirts of Cave Creek, where the residential ends and business begins, turn left on Spur Cross, where there is a left-turn lane, a sign "Spur Cross," and the restaurant The Cracked Crab.  Follow Spur Cross signs some three miles until the end of the Spur Cross Rd. pavement, then continue another mile on a good dirt road to a large corral gateway structure, the upright poles are on either side of the road, with the crosspiece extending over the road. Turn left and park immediately BEFORE the gateway. The quarter-mile walking trail, flat, parallel to the road you came in on, in the direction you just drove from, begins at a fence, goes through low thick desert vegetation to a clearing and location of Geoffrey's  bench, which marks the beginning of the trail down to the creek.
