The 'after the night out' photo was taken outside my parent's house in
Harrogate. It features me, Peter Sutcliffe, and Geoff. It was taken
around 1960 after a pub crawl in Harrogate. We had 'liberated' the
shield from one of the hostelries we had graced with our custom that
evening. When we sobered up the next morning, we took it back. This was
in the days before the 'breathalyser' when it was normal custom to drink
as much as you could, and then drive home. The thought horrifies me now,
but somehow we all seemed to survive. Peter Sutcliffe was the person who
organised the service at the Priory Church with me on March 17th. Along
with John Bolwell, he was another very close friend of Geoff's at that
time, and continued his correspondence until the end. He has visited
Geoff at the cabin. I was best man at Peter and Margaret's wedding, and
Geoff was a groomsman. There is a photo of Geoff, me and Peter, taken at
Peter's wedding, in 1960. I know the date is right because Peter and
Margie have just celebrated their ruby wedding anniversary, which is 40
years. I will try and get a copy for you, and e-mail it.

I enclose a copy of the photo of Bolton Priory. (Bolton Abbey is the
name of the village, but the building is a priory, not an abbey - very
confusing!). I also enclose some others that you may not have seen. One
shows the interior of the Priory Church, where the service was held. One
is taken across a river, which is the River Wharfe, and gives its name
to 'Wharfedale' - one of the Yorkshire Dales. This one is taken from the
east, and the roof you can see at the top of the picture where the
flagpole is, is the roof of the Priory Church, which was once a part of
the whole complex until Henry VIII took a hand. As mentioned before, he
allowed it to remain as it was used as a parish church by the village of
Bolton Abbey. |
